E-books - Great Books of the Western World: Home

Welcome

Welcome to E-books Great Books of the Western World. This is a collection of some of public domain books considered by many to represent the greatest works of Western civilization.  This selection is loosely based upon Encyclopedia Britannica's Great Works of the Western World series compiled by University of Chicago president Robert Hutchins and philosopher Mortimer Adler.  An attempt has been made to select the best books from the public domain e-book collections and make them accessible to our students. The items were also selected on the basis of scanned image quality.

Most of the texts are available as downloads in a variety of formats from the Internet Archive, Google Books and other Web based repositories.

Most of the selections offer Acrobat .pdf files for download.  PDFs and DJVU represent reproduction closest to the original form. Epub and Kindle formats often leave much to desire.
