Chicago 18th Edition: Paper Format

Types of Chicago Paper Formats

Chicago 18th ed. has two style formats:

Notes-Bibliography System and Author-Date System

Aside from the use of numbered notes versus parenthetical references in the text, the two systems share a similar style. See the information on each type to decide which format best fits your paper. Reach out to your professor to double-check what citation format you should be using.

Notes-Bibliography System

Chicago 18th Edition Paper Format

  • Title page
    • Title: Centered, bold, about 1/3 of the way down the page, headline-style capitalization. The title font may be 2-3 points larger than the main text.
    • Name: Centered, 12pt font, middle of the page
    • Course Title: Centered, 12pt font, below Name
    • Instructor: Centered, 12pt font, below Course Title
    • DateCentered, 12pt font, below Instructor
    • Add any other information requested by your instructor.
      • Please note: Do not make your cover page decorative by using bold, underline, or creative fonts.
      • Please note: Do not include a page number on the cover page.

  • Body of Paper
    • Font: Use font requested by your instructor. If not specified, use 12pt Times New Roman, 12pt Calibri, or 11pt Arial. (Use this for the Title Page as well)
    • Double spaced.
    • All titles/headings should be bold.
    • Margins: At least 1 in. from edge of page.
    • Indents: 1/2 in. indent of first line in each paragraph.
    • Page numbers: Top right or bottom center of page; 1/2 in. margins from edge of page. The Title Page does not get a page number, and the first page of text should begin with page '2.'

  • Footnote
    • Superscript: Each citation is assigned a superscript number to match the Bibliography page.
    • Notes contain all of the citation information and appear for each citation. If the citation is repeated, a shortened notes is used.

  • Bibliography
    • Title: Centered, bold, at the top.
    • Organization: Citations are arranged alphabetically by author's last name.
    • Single spaced, with one space between each entry.
    • Indent: The citations use a hanging indent, where the first line is left-aligned, while subsequent lines are indented.
