You can do the research yourself to locate the copyright holder, and then write to them explaining how you will use the material. You may get permission to use the work at no cost, at a reasonable cost, at an exhorbitant cost or not at all.

Permission Vendors

Eastern University has renewed the Annual Copyright License from the Copyright Clearance Center. This license enables faculty, librarians, research staff, and administration to reproduce and distribute copyrighted content in both print and digital form across campus, while remaining in compliance with copyright laws and University guidelines. Some common uses covered by the license include:

  • Course packs (print and electronic)
  • Class handouts
  • Library reserves (print and electronic)
  • Electronic course content (intranet and learning management system postings)

Some license exclusions:

  • Non-education uses (e.g. promotional & advertising)
  • Interlibrary loan transactions
