Citing in APA Format: Citing the Bible

This guide will assist you in citing electronic and print resources. Each tab will indicate the type of resource and how to cite.

In Text Citations

How do I cite the Bible in my paper?

Bible passages only need to be cited in the text of your paper; no reference list citation is required.

"Quote" (Book Chapter:Verse, Translation).

Example: "Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths" (Psalm 25:4, The New King James Version).

Example: In Psalm 25:4 (The New King James Version), it says that .....

Indicate which version at the first use of Scripture then no reference is needed unless you use another Bible version.

Subsequent citations of the same Bible version do not need to be included after citing the first time. However, if you use a different version indicate the new version in the text citation.

Citing Commentaries


A chapter in an edited book in a multi-volume work:


Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Date). Title of chapter. In Editor’s Name/s (Ed. or Eds.), Title of work: Vol. #. Name of

           volume (pp. #s). City of Publisher: Publisher.


Hagner, D. A. (1995). The parable about fulfilling responsibility. In B.M. Metzger, D.A. Hubbard, & G. W. Barker

(Eds.), Word biblical commentary: Vol. 33B. Matthew 14-18 (pp. 730-737). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson.


A multi-volume work:


Last Name, First Initial. (Ed.). (Date). Title of Volume. Title of Commentary Multi-volume work. Vol. # (pp. #’s). City of

           Publisher: Publisher.


Nichol, F. (Ed.). (1980). The Seventh-day Adventist bible commentary, Vol. 5. (pp. 506-514). Hagerstown, MD: Review and

             Herald Publishing Association.


Example of a book in a series:


[A book in a series (Such as the NIV Application Commentary, NICOT, or NICNT).]

           Publisher: Publisher.
