Citing in APA Format: Newspapers

This guide will assist you in citing electronic and print resources. Each tab will indicate the type of resource and how to cite.


Online newspaper article:

Zernike, K. (2009, April 1). Paying in full as the ticket into colleges.  The New York Times.  Retrieved from

Brody, J. E. (2007, December 11). Mental reserves keep brains agile. The New York Times. Retrieved from

Provide the exact date for a reference from a daily newspaper or weekly periodical.

Give the home page URL when the online version of the article is available by searching an index, to avoid nonworking URLs.

If the newspaper’s name starts with “The,” include it in italics

APA Electronic Resources #9; p14

Print Newspaper

Author Last name, First Initial. (Date). Article title, Newspaper title, Page(s).

* If an article appears in multiple pages, provide all page numbers and separate the numbers with a comma.

* Precede page numbers for newspaper articles with a p. or pp.
